He studied under Rudolf Jettel at the Viennese Academy of Music. He subsequently enjoyed success at the international music competition in Genf. His orchestral career brought him to the Viennese Symphonic Orchestra (1972-1986) as solo clarinettist and to the Berlin Philharmonic (1986-1992). He was one of the founder members of the “Ensemble 20th Century” in Vienna and a member of the “Philharmonisches Oktett Berlin”, within the framework of his busy chamber music schedule. He has been university professor at the Mozarteum, Salzburg since 1992.
